Arrive Alive® Program

CHARLOTTE, NC (Feb. 22, 2007) – For the fifth consecutive year, the Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo, L.L.P. ® are presenting its “Arrive Alive ® ! Don’t Drink and Drive” community outreach program to area high schools to help reduce tragedies related to underage drinking and driving.

Arrive Alive ® is targeted to area high school juniors and seniors who often face the decision of underage drinking and driving, which is more prevalent during times of celebration such as spring break, prom and graduation. The program kicks off March 13 at South Mecklenburg High School and will continue through May.

During the presentation, Attorney Michael A. DeMayo will share stories and photos of deadly drunk driving accidents, including the loss of numerous teenagers injured or killed as a result of drinking and driving.

“Our office deals with alcohol-related accidents on almost a daily basis and it is our goal to prevent even one tragic accident from occurring with our program,” DeMayo said. “We want teenagers to see the reality of the severe consequences that can result from one bad decision, and hope to help them make smarter decisions that will save their lives.”

Also this year, guest speakers Peggy and Josh Bennett will share their story of how drinking and driving devastated their lives. Josh Bennett was severely brain injured in 2001 after crashing his vehicle into an abutment on Monroe Road at 70 miles per hour. He was intoxicated and was only 18 years old. After waking from a five-month coma, Josh continues his slow recovery, but will suffer the impact of major brain damage for the rest of his life. His mother, Peggy, will share her message with teens about how Josh’s bad decision changed their lives forever.

Since its inception in 2003, the Arrive Alive ® program has been presented to nearly 30 schools, including: Ashbrook High, Bandys High School, Butler High School, Charlotte Catholic High School, Charlotte Christian School, Cherryville High, East Mecklenburg High School, E.E. Waddell High School, Forestview High School, Garringer High School, Harding High School, Hopewell High School, Hunter Huss, Independence High School, Maiden High School, Myers Park High School, North Gaston, North Mecklenburg High School, Northwest School of Arts, Olympic High School, Providence Day School, South Mecklenburg High School, South Point, St. Stephens High School, Vance High School, West Charlotte High School and West Mecklenburg High School.

Arrive Alive ® is held in conjunction with the annual Michael A. DeMayo Scholarship Program, which awards $25,000 in scholarships to 10 graduating seniors based on their academic achievement, community service and response to an essay question asking for their solutions and ideas about educating and preventing fellow teenagers from the tragic consequences of drinking and driving.
