For many years, the drug known as Fen Phen was prescribed to people to treat obesity, binge eating, and other eating problems. Although Fen Phen was removed from shelves in 1997 by FDA request, thousands of victims are still coming forward with Fen Phen-related medical problems.
Fen Phen is actually a combination of two different drugs within the same pill: Fenfluramine (Fen) and phentermine (Phen). Since its FDA approval, Fen Phen has been used by millions of Americans to inhibit the body’s natural cravings for food, while raising the body’s metabolism and levels of serotonin. The overall effect of Fen Phen is to increase a person’s metabolism so that they burn fat faster, while keeping them feeling full by increasing their serotonin levels.
Although thousands of people filed dangerous drug claims soon after Fen Phen was taken off the market, the serious side effects of Fen Phen are often not found for years after victims have stopped taking the drug. The dangerous side effects of Fen Phen can include:
- Valvular Heart Disease
- Endocardial Fibrosis
- Primary Pulmonary Hypertension
- Abdominal Pain
The real danger of Fen Phen is that it can cause primary pulmonary hypertension (PPH). PPH inhibits blood flow from the right side of the heart to the lungs. This very dangerous Fen Phen side effect causes serious problems for heart valves and arteries, and it can even lead to heart failure and death.
