Erbs Palsy

Erbs palsy is a form of brachial plexus palsy that causes limited movement of the upper body, specifically in the areas around the shoulder and down the arm. Unlike cerebral palsy, erbs palsy is not caused by brain injury; however, it can still be caused by the negligence of a medical professional.

Erbs palsy is caused by an injury to the brachial plexus, which is a bundle of nerves that runs from the spine to the shoulder and down the arm. Erbs palsy can be caused if a doctor or nurse is negligent during the childbirth process and causes injury to the brachial plexus. This type of negligence is also known as medical malpractice.

Erbs palsy can also be cause by a number of other childbirth factors that might hurt the brachial plexus. This bundle of nerves can be damaged if there is a difficult birth, the child is large, forceps must be used, or vacuum birth procedures are used.

When you are in the hands of a healthcare professional during your childbirth, you expect them to provide you with an appropriate standard of care. Some doctors and nurses fail to provide patients with that standard of care and their negligence can lead to erbs palsy.

Erbs palsy can be identified by symptoms such as:

  • Inability to Move Arms
  • Lack of Sensation of Arms or Hands
  • Uncontrolled Arm Movement
  • Upper Body Paralysis
  • Paralysis in One or More Limbs
  • Lack of Muscle Control
  • Low Muscle Tone/Strength
  • Limpness

In some cases, erbs palsy can be permanent, preventing the child from ever developing like other, normal children. Most erbs palsy cases can be treated, however, depending on the extent and location of the nerve damage.

While erbs palsy is largely preventable, negligence by a medical professional that leads to erbs palsy should not be ignored. Contact an experienced medical malpractice lawyer immediately. An experienced medical malpractice lawyer will help you in receiving compensation for losses such as:
