Official Contest Rules

Eligibility
High school seniors who reside and attend school in the counties served by the Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo, L.L.P. ® are encouraged to participate. North Carolina counties include: Mecklenburg, Gaston, Catawba, Union, Cabarrus, Cleveland, Lincoln, Rowan, Caldwell, Stanly, Iredell, Alexander, Burke,  Robeson, Scotland, Richmond, Anson and Cumberland. South Carolina counties include: York, Lancaster, Chesterfield, Marlboro and Dillon.

Entering the Contest
High school seniors may download the application.

To qualify, the student MUST have applied for acceptance for full-time enrollment at a four-year college or university and return the following items to our office.

  1. A typewritten or neatly printed application
  2. A presentation (video/PowerPoint/brochure/website/speech) that encourages fellow teens to abstain from underage drinking and driving and/or highlights the dangers of drinking and driving
  3. High school transcript
  4. SAT scores (if not included in transcript, a printout from CollegeBoard.com is acceptable)
  5. Two letters of recommendation (from teachers, athletic coaches, school administrators, club advisors, volunteer work supervisors, employers, religious leaders or family friends)

All of these items MUST be returned to our office in the same packet. Items mailed separately (i.e. letters of recommendation, transcripts, etc.) will not be accepted.

Types of Acceptable Presentations
Presentations will be judged on students' abilities to analyze and discuss the topic and produce a quality video/PowerPoint/brochure/website/speech.

  • Video
    28- to 29-second Public Service Announcement Must be recorded on DVD; student’s name and school should appear directly on DVD; must provide copy of script
  • PowerPoint
    15 slide minimum – full-sized slides, printed in color; also must provide copy of PowerPoint on CD
  • Brochure/Booklet
    8 page minimum – printed in color; also must provide copy of brochure/booklet on CD
  • Website
    10 page minimum – printed in color; also must provide copy of website on CD
  • Speech
    750-1,000 words – must submit double-spaced hard copy, as well as DVD of student reciting speech (3 to 5 minutes)

Applications must be postmarked by March 1, 2010. All personal information provided will be kept strictly confidential. The Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo, L.L.P. ® will not be responsible for any late, lost or damaged entries. Entries must be sent by mail. Entries sent by e-mail will not be accepted.

Ownership of Entries
All entries submitted to the Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo, L.L.P. ® in connection with this contest, along with all copyright, trademark and other proprietary rights associated therewith, become the property of Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo, L.L.P. ® upon submission. Entry materials will not be returned to any entrant. By submitting an entry, you acknowledge that if you win the scholarship contest, Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo, L.L.P. ® will own all rights to use, modify, reproduce, publish, perform, display, distribute and promote the artwork in perpetuity without compensation to you or any other person.

Selection of Winners
A panel of judges representing the Law Offices of Michael A. Demayo will choose 15 winners. The decision of the judges will be final. Each scholarship recipient will be notified by telephone no later than April 9, 2010. Winners will be posted on the Law Offices of Michael A. Demayo website. Entries will be disqualified if they contain vulgar or inappropriate content; are not turned in with all the proper paperwork; have postmarks later than Monday, March 1, 2010; or use copyrighted materials.

Prizes
Fifteen winners will each receive a $2,500 scholarship to the college of their choice. Odds of winning a prize depend on the number of entries received.

Use of Name, Likeness, Etc.
As a condition of receiving any prize, each winner as well as their parents or legal guardians will be required to consent to the use of their name, age, area of residence and school name. You must also consent to using your likeness (as in a photograph or on television) and prize information, without limitations, for promotional purposes without further payment.

Release
By entering the contest, you and your parents or legal guardians release and agree to hold harmless Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo, L.L.P. ®, and each of their partners or employees, from any liability whatsoever in connection with entering the contest, accepting any prize, or anything that may arise related to the contest. The Law Offices of Michael A. Demayo reserves the right to use the concepts from entries submitted in the competition. All winning entrants will be required to sign releases and waivers of liability.

Contest Information
For a list of winners, send a stamped, self-addressed envelope after April 9, 2010 to the Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo, L.L.P. ® at address listed above. Entrants agree to be bound by these official rules and the decisions of Law Offices of Michael A. DeMayo, L.L.P. ®
