Michael A DeMayo Receives Steve Newman Excellence in Volunteering Award

CHARLOTTE, NC (Oct. 22, 2007) — Attorney Michael A. DeMayo is the recipient of the Steve Newman Excellence in Volunteering Award for his work in preventing underage drinking and driving. The award was presented Oct. 19 by Substance Abuse Prevention Services at the organization’s annual awards luncheon.

Additionally, DeMayo was named “Boss of the Year” on Oct. 15 by the Legal Support Staff of the Greater Charlotte Area. DeMayo was nominated for going “above and beyond the duties of a boss” and for his continued support of his staff and the community.

In 2003, DeMayo developed two community outreach programs targeted to high school students and designed to help reduce tragedies relating to underage drinking and driving. During the Arrive Alive ® presentations, DeMayo shares stories and photos of deadly drunk driving accidents, including the loss of numerous teenagers injured or killed as a result of drinking and driving.

Arrive Alive ® is held in conjunction with the annual Michael A. DeMayo Scholarship Program, which awards $25,000 in scholarships to 10 graduating seniors based on their academic achievement, community service and response to an essay question asking for their solutions and ideas about educating and preventing fellow teenagers and young drivers from the tragic consequences of drinking and driving.

“Our office deals with alcohol-related accidents on almost a daily basis. Since there are never any words to comfort clients who have lost loved ones, this is our chance to give back in another way,” DeMayo said. “Through these programs we want to try and prevent accidents caused by underage drinking and driving and help teenagers make smarter decisions.”
