GM Recall: 6.3 Million Vehicles Involved

Consumer Safety Alert

General Motors (GM) has recalled 6.3 million motor vehicles because of a defective ignition switch that has been linked to multiple injuries and deaths.  As many as 13 people may have died as a result of a defective ignition switch that caused airbags to become unknowingly disabled.  GM announced that some of its engineers knew almost ten years ago that certain ignition switches could suddenly become disabled after the keys were “jarred.”

General Motors has been investigated by Federal Authorities as a result of the faulty ignition switches.  The CEO of General Motors, Mary Barra testified before Congress during the last weeks of April, 2014 that t she did not know why it had taken years for the safety defect to be announced and for the vehicles to be recalled.  The part of the ignition switch recall that is at the issue would have cost less than sixty cents  ($00.60)  to replace according to its manufacturer.  General Motors announced that they will begin replacing the faulty ignition switches with replacement parts as soon as this week.

The General Motor Safety Recall Website identifies all of the vehicles involved in the recall:  All 2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5, 2003-2007 Saturn Ion, 2006-2007 Chevrolet HHR, 2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada), 2006-2007 Pontiac Solstice and 2007 Saturn Sky vehicles are involved in the recall. On March 28, 2014, the recall was expanded to include the following vehicles – 2008 – 2010 Pontiac Solstice and G5; 2008-2010 Saturn Sky; 2008-2010 Chevrolet Cobalt; 2008-2011 Chevrolet HHR.

Anyone that may be driving one of these vehicles should stop driving the vehicle immediately and contact their local General Motors dealership to inquire about the recall and about having their vehicle repaired.  Consumers that have been injured in a motor vehicle accident involving a GM recalled vehicle may be entitled to monetary compensation.  If you or someone you know has been injured because of a defective ignition switch, please call DeMayo Law Offices, L.L.P. for a free case evaluation.  (877) 333-1000.
